FREE PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION: PASSENGER INFORMATION AT THE HEART OF NETWORK MANAGEMENT

PASSENGER INFORMATION: THE ESSENTIAL DRIVER OF A WELL-FUNCTIONING MOBILITY SYSTEM
WORLD PUBLIC TRANSPORT DAY: PUBLIC TRANSPORT AT THE HEART OF A COLLECTIVE CHALLENGE

On April 17, 2026, transit systems, operators, transit authorities, and millions of passengers around the world will celebrate World Public Transport Day for the very first time. This initiative, led by the UITP, highlights the fundamental role of public transit in our lives, our cities, our economy, and our transition to a green economy.
It is a wonderful opportunity to pause for a moment and reflect on the profound changes taking place in the transportation sector.
A sector at the heart of all the challenges of our time
Public transportation has never been more necessary than it is today. The climate emergency, urban densification, low-emission zone policies, the planned phase-out of internal combustion engines in Europe, and more… Everything is pushing us in the same direction: fewer private cars and more shared mobility.
Today, citizens are increasingly favoring public transit, major cities are expanding their networks, and public transit authorities are investing, planning, and building.
Yet, behind this positive momentum lie structural tensions that industry professionals know all too well.
Transport Networks Under Pressure
Rising operating costs, inflation, market liberalization, regional development, and more… Today, transport operators face a difficult challenge: maintaining—or even improving—the quality of service for an ever-growing and increasingly demanding passenger base.
This shift is transforming the role of operators and public transport authorities. The quality of a network is no longer measured solely in terms of kilometers of track or punctuality. It is also measured by the relationship with the user.
A passenger who doesn't understand what's happening when their train is late will likely not return. A passenger who is poorly informed when choosing their mode of transport will turn to the car. A recent study* shows that a lack of information discourages nearly three out of four passengers from using public transit. That's significant!
The mobility experience (of which passenger information is a central component) has become just as important as service frequency or ticket price.
A day to highlight the importance of public transportation in our cities
World Public Transport Day is an opportunity to celebrate what public transportation makes possible: access to jobs and education, reduced carbon emissions, freedom, independence, and social connections.
Behind every network, there are thousands of women and men working behind the scenes to ensure that journeys go smoothly. Drivers, agents, operations teams, engineers, and communications teams: this is a sector that deserves to be seen and recognized.
World Public Transport Day is a global celebration that comes to life through local initiatives around the world. At Qommute, we're proud to be part of it and to create, every day, messages that transform the mobility experience for both travelers and transit systems.
